Recognize emotions

What are emotions?

Emotion in English is emotion, which represents the energy flowing in our body. When we are stimulated and trigger inner feelings, physical reactions, thoughts and actions, we are called emotions. For example, when someone walks into a back alley and encounters a vicious-looking dog (stimulus), he feels very frightened and worries that he will be bitten (inner feelings and thoughts), his heart beats faster and he trembles (physical reaction), and he finally decides to take a quick detour and leave (action).

Naturalist Darwin mentioned that humans have six basic emotions, including happiness, sadness, fear, disgust, anger and surprise, which are instinctive emotions that help humans improve their chances of survival. Other complex emotions, such as excitement, grievance, inferiority, jealousy, guilt, loneliness, etc., are derived from a mixture of basic emotions and arise after learning and socialization.

Emotions are neither good nor bad

Most people are used to classifying emotions into positive and negative. They feel that happiness is a positive emotion, while sadness, anger, and fear are harmful to people. In fact, emotions are neither good nor bad. Each emotion has its own unique meaning. For example, feeling fearful and uneasy about unfamiliar environments reflects the desire for security and reminds us to stay away from danger. Being vulnerable and crying when you are sad can attract care and support and promote interpersonal connections.

Emotional health

If you are biased against emotions, deny and suppress your true feelings, pretend to be happy when you are sad, or endure silently when you are angry, it will easily lead to physical and mental health problems. The so-called emotional health does not mean to be in a happy mood all the time, but to be able to be aware of your different emotions, understand your inner needs, and express and adjust them in a healthy and appropriate way to restore peace of mind.
